Kieran Garland is currently studying the Level 2 Electrical course at EKC Plumbing and Electrical Training Centre and is already enjoying the practical introduction to a future in the electrical trade.
We caught up with him to hear about his journey so far, how he made the transition from creative industries into trades, and what he’s looking forward to next.

Why did you choose to study the Electrician course at EKC Training?
“Previously, I’ve been doing bartending, and I also studied Film and TV. However, I think I just wanted something new in a way to experience. It helped that I’ve also wanted to get into trade for a very long time and learn key skills, so this course seemed like it would be the best fit for me.”
How long have you been on the course?
“I’ve been doing the course for around three months now. My course overall takes a total of six to seven months. The finish dates depend on when you get all your tests done and how much progress you’re making towards the end of the course.”
What are your plans after you complete the course?
“I plan on either doing an apprenticeship after this once I’ve completed my Level 2. I’ve got a few lined up already which is pretty exciting.
“I could also learn further with some small jobs where I could further learn about the trade and increase my knowledge of how to be a better electrician.”
What’s your experience been like with EKC Training so far?
“Studying here means I get a very supportive environment and everyone’s really nice here.
“Again, I’m very new to all of this so anything in that matter of getting help or asking a question, Alex and the rest of my tutors here have been superb with it. I don’t feel that I’m treated any different from the other students because of my lack of experience, which is great.”
What do you enjoy most about being on the course?
“I enjoy how we’re taught on the course and the ways of learning we do. It is education but it doesn’t feel like school. You’ve always got a little bit of freedom and the tutors give you this so that the course isn’t too formal and will help you learn and adapt based on your interests and needs.
“My favourite part however is just learning it all really, and getting that practical experience with it. I feel like everyone will say they prefer the physical side to the theory side of it but for me it’s just interesting to install a plug, install a light, and think about how it’s done.”
Have you found yourself applying any of your new skills already?
“Funnily enough I’m now looking at all the stuff at home, thinking in my head about how I can fix things when they break.”
If you’re thinking about a career in the electrical industry or looking for a fresh start in a skilled trade, a course like the one Kieran is studying could be a great opportunity.
